The Greek Ghost Army That Held Back the Nazis
Tall tales always seem to get taller, but their purpose often stays the same. The myth of Frangokastello might be little more than morning dew, but to the people of southwestern Crete - it is anything but a mirage.
One more from Crete and then I think I'll tell the story of how I talked my way out of Lebanese prison to start our season there.

This Mythical Monster Was Actually Real

To be clear, all of this is merely my opinion. How could I possibly know the evolution of a myth thousands of years ago? But that said, some myths have meanings, like false memories of a real event. And at least as I see it, the meaning behind Theseus and the Minotaur is nothing less than the conquest and destruction of one of earth's oldest civilizations. It's an echo, being repeated over a th...

Goodbye Micronesia, hello Mediterranean. The next few episodes are set in Crete, Greece - an island absolutely littered in stray cats. The Country That Nobody Cares About

This isn't an attempt to name and shame one of the least-polluting, poorest nations on the planet for not saving the world single-handedly. It is merely a symbolic reminder of what it means to do our part in a giant system we often feel powerless to control. Saving the world might feel (and perhaps be) impossible, but suffice it to say that if we're going to demand something of others, at the v...

I was reading a history book about Pohnpei called "Upon a Stone Altar" and it had a single page describing the four day purge they undertook before battle. But it was still something worth thinking about, because war is stupid, but I think it's pretty safe to say so are we...

    The Phonecian story was supported by their description of the sun being in the North. The locals ridiculed this statement but modern historians accept it as proof that they sailed down into the Southern regions.

      Modern historians absolutely do not consider that proof, as there was a great deal of trade routes long established that would have let them know about the uniquenesses of the southern hemisphere without having to have circumnavigated it themselves But they do consider it a piece of theoretically supportive evidence

    Let's hope your video will not result in this village being besieged by tourists demanding the key to scramble over the artwork of c. 12,000 years ago. However, having said this I am amazed the archaeological association of Greece with engineers has not shored up the rocks around this treasure to protect it or lifted the rock and put it in a museum. Yes, I realise it would be a huge operation but surely worthwhile.

    I believe all creatures today's society regardcas myths or legends or fairy tales are all REAL, derived from geneyic engineering of ancient advanced civilisations. Mermaids, unicorns dragons, cyclops, medusa, centuars, minotars, gorgons, etc, etc. All really existed, but went extinct ...just like the dodo, white rhino, sabre toothed tiger, etc, etc. And soon to be extinct elephant, pangalins, hedgehogs, etc, due to poaching, hunting, polution, etc.

    "Franco Castello" probably doesn't refer to frechs. Franco has a double meaning, it can mean French, and it can mean free. I see no reason for the Venetians to entitle a castle to the French in an area the French never were, it is way more likely they just named their castle "free castle". It is an old word in Italian now, but we still use it to define those areas where there are no taxes on commerce, and this is a meaning way more likely to make sense for a trade empire like Venice.

    • @user-ex6nd8dq8w
      @user-ex6nd8dq8w День тому

      No it was not the Venetians who named it Frankokastello but the Greeks. The name caught on quite later on in Ottoman times. Greeks at the time would call "Franks" just any western European including North Italians. The name roots back to the Carolingian Empire which indeed covered much of western Europe and included numerous ethnicities. As late as in the late 19th century when Greeks adopted the western European style of clothes, they were calling them "Frangkika", not implying they were French clothes but rather collectively western European. Frangia was also the name of France in Greek but in the 10th century the more antiquated "Gallia" caught on, perhaps in an effort to avoid the ubiquitous term "Frangkos".
